In 2017, designer Nicholas Baker sketched a chair concept and posted it on Instagram — nothing too crazy, just a simple plywood chair. Over the course of the next two years, Baker continued to sketch one unique chair each week, and #nickschairsketches was born. What began as a personal exercise in creativity soon grew into a popular design activity full of stylistic growth and material exploration. Baker garnered an immense following for his ability to challenge the chair archetype and defy preconceived notions of what an object to be rested on could be. Some chairs were simple, some were crazy, and some even got built.
Nick’s Chair Sketches is a limited edition collection of 100 chairs. Each chair is unique and numbered #001 - #100 in the order they were created. The NFTs will be available on OpenSea, first come first serve. One chair will be released each day for 100 days. To keep up to date and know when the next chair drops, follow @nickpbaker on twitter.
Date: February 24th - June 4th, 2021
When: daily at random, follow @nickpbaker to be notified
How: scroll to the bottom if you are new to collecting NFTs
Below are all 100 chair sketches, remastered and high resolution. Click on a chair to view its name, number, and link to OpenSea (when available). Material types will also be available on OpenSea in the properties tab. View the breakdown of material types and frequency at the bottom of this page.
Each chair is made up of one or more materials. Below you can see the frequency of certain types of materials. More than half the chairs have Metal, making it the most common material. The least common is Glass, with only three chairs having that material. The Novel material is a special attribute for chairs with a crazy theme or material that didn’t fit with the others. There’s even the infamous Strap material which includes chairs with phat straps and thicc bands.
Most chairs have one or two materials. Chairs with three materials are uncommon. There is only one chair with four material types, the Sleigh Chair.
What’s an NFT?
Non Fungible Tokens track who owns a digital asset. There’s a wealth of information about them, but think of NFTs as trading cards or pieces of art. Until recently, digital things like images, video, or audio had little to no value because they could be copied without a true way to verify original ownership. Now with the blockchain anyone can verify who owns the original digital thing. Owning one of these chair sketches is the equivalent of owning a real physical sketch.
How do I collect a chair sketch?
There’s a great article about collecting on OpenSea here, but for a quick answer, see below.
Download and install a Chrome browser plugin called MetaMask. This will allow websites (that you authorize) access to your Ethereum account.
If you made a new account, buy some Ethereum. The MetaMask plugin has a button that will allow you to buy Ethereum directly or you can send Ethereum to MetaMask from Coinbase.
Once you have the plugin installed, go to opensea.io/collections/nickschairsketches. OpenSea will recognize it and add buttons that allow you to buy Nick’s Chair Sketches.
happy collecting : )
